Fancy coloured lab grown diamonds. Kaleidoscopic diamonds.
Why a "fancy" coloured lab diamond is a hidden gem
"The ring arrived this morning.
My hand doesn't do it justice. It is amazing.
It will surely get noticed and when it does I will tell inquiring people about Pobjoy.
Thank you kindly."
Creating coloured lab diamonds
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Pink
Fancy colours found in rare natural diamonds evolve entirely through natural, though unusual, processes.
With lab grown diamonds this process is different and varies between colour hues.
Certain colours, such as pinks and reds, can only be achieved by employing sophisticated post-growth treatments.
To create the green colour the growing diamond is exposed to radiation in the form of electron beams.
This causes changes in the stone's crystal structure which produces the required hue.
Boron is introduced to the diamond during the growing process, which interacts with carbon atoms.
This causes the diamond to absorb red, green and yellow light while allowing blue light to be emitted.
Once a diamond has been grown with nitrogen impurities contained within it, subjecting it to radiation and extremely high temperatures creates the much sought after pink colouring.
This irradiating treatment is conducted post-growth to produce a range of pink hues ranging from faint to deep intense saturation. All pink and red tone lab grown diamonds are subject to some degree of post growth treatment.

How do lab diamonds compare?
Lab grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure and optical properties as earth created diamonds. They are not diamond simulants.
Are they more ethical?
Lab grown diamonds are less impactful to the environment than mined, earth created diamonds. They use significantly fewer resources and emit less air polution to create.
